Ukrainian icebreaker provides US Antarctic research for the first time in history
For several days, the scientific vessel “Noosfera” has been operating in the Southern Ocean around the American Antarctic station Palmer.
The icebreaker provides marine research on behalf of the US National Science Foundation, the National Antarctic Research Center reports.
“For several days, “Noosfera” has been operating in the waters around the American Antarctic station Palmer. From the icebreaker, researchers from the United States have been carrying out their marine research program. In honor of such cooperation, the flags of both countries have been raised on both the ship and the station,” the scientific center said.
Such a mission is the first not only for “Noosfera”, but also for the Ukrainian fleet in general.
At the end of this week, “Noosfera” is to complete its mission on Palmer and, with American colleagues on board, set off for the Ukrainian Antarctic station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, where negotiations are planned to expand cooperation.
Ahead are collaborations with Spain, the Czech Republic, and the implementation of two EU Horizon Europe projects.
As previously reported by USM, the fourth Antarctic season of the “Noosfera” is currently underway, which is the most international. This season, the Ukrainian vessel has already delivered expeditions to the Polish Antarctic stations “Artztowski” and “Vernadskyi”.
