Ukrainian imports will drop by 20% due to the blocking of the Polish border
Blocking of checkpoints on the border with Ukraine by Polish protesters will lead to the loss of 20% of Ukrainian imports.
Weeks of road blockades by Polish truckers protesting at the border will cut Ukraine’s total imports by about a fifth and could cost Kyiv one percentage point of GDP growth if they continue. This was reported by Reuters with reference to the Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine Taras Kachka.
Thousands of trucks have been blocked at the border due to protests by Polish carriers. The main demand of the Polish protesters is to cancel the simplified procedure for entering the EU for Ukrainian truck drivers.
Thus, in the first 26 days of November, Ukraine imported goods worth 3.8 billion dollars, compared to 5.2 billion dollars for the whole of October. The government is now trying to minimize the damage and will invest in alternative export routes.
