Ukrainian Magura V5 sea drone found near Greek islands

An unmanned maritime drone was found near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. Previously, it did not have explosives, but there were detonators on board.

Greece has launched an investigation after a Ukrainian Magura V5 maritime drone was found in the waters near the island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. This is reported by Ekathimerini.

The device was found by fishermen near Cape Ducato in a coastal cave. According to the publication, the drone’s engine was still running at that time. After that, the fishermen towed the device to the port of Vasiliki, where it was handed over to the Greek Coast Guard.

The discovery triggered an interagency operation involving the Greek authorities and the Ministry of National Defense. Mine clearance specialists were also involved in the inspection.

A preliminary examination showed that the drone contained detonators, but there were no explosives on board. This reduced initial concerns about the possible danger of the device.

Greek investigators are currently considering several versions. These include the drone’s possible use for drug smuggling or a connection to potential attacks on vessels associated with the Russian “shadow fleet.” As USM reported, drones recently attacked two “shadow fleet” vessels near Novorossiysk.
