Ukrainian-Mexican research to be conducted on board the icebreaker “Noosfera”

Ukraine will host the first Mexican Antarctic expedition at the Akademik Vernadsky station, and joint research will be conducted aboard the Noosfera”.

A memorandum on scientific cooperation in Antarctica was signed with the Mexican Agency for Antarctic Research (AMEA), the National Antarctic Research Center reports.

The document provides for joint Ukrainian-Mexican research both aboard the Ukrainian research vessel, the icebreaker “Noosfera”, and at the Akademik Vernadsky station.

“For Mexico, this memorandum is a special event in the history of science, as it paves the way for the first expedition to the icy continent. For Ukraine, in addition to scientific interest, “Antarctic diplomacy” is of great importance,” the scientists note.

AMEA President Patricia Valdespino also emphasized that the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), in particular the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology (ICMyL), the National School of Earth Sciences, as well as the Faculty of Natural Sciences, are joining the launch of the project.

“Like no other country, Ukraine offers Mexican scientists cooperation in Antarctica. We strive to actively participate in making decisions that improve our relationship with the planet through science, technology and sustainable development,” shared Patricia Valdespino.

It should be noted that the memorandum of cooperation was concluded for 5 years. Its signing was part of the event “Opening White Borders: Ukraine and Mexico United for Peace and Antarctic Science” within the framework of the official visit of Ukrainian scientists to Mexico.

As a reminder, in May, “Noosfera” completed its fourth Antarctic season, which became a record in terms of the number of flights and international collaborations.
