Ukrainian sailor who was discharged from ship managed to receive $2,500 in compensation
The Ukrainian Maritime Transport Workers’ Union (ITF) and the Ukrainian Maritime Transport Workers’ Union (MTWTU) helped defend the rights of a Ukrainian seafarer whose contract was terminated early by the shipowner.
This was повідомляє reported by the Maritime Transport Workers’ Union of Ukraine (MTWTU).
A Ukrainian seafarer who worked on a vessel covered by the ITF collective agreement contacted the union regarding the possibility of receiving compensation for the early termination of his contract by the shipowner.
It is known that an atypical incident occurred on the vessel, due to which it was detained in the port, and an investigation was launched on board. After completing all procedures, the vessel was allowed to go to sea.
The persons found to be involved in the incident left the ship, and the rest of the crew were confirmed that their contracts remained valid.
“However, later the seafarers learned that the company had decided to replace the entire crew, although no official notification had been received. The seafarer in question informed the company of his willingness to continue working on board. Despite this, he was written off,” the MTWTU said.
Upon returning home, he again applied to the company with a request to be transferred to another vessel to complete the contract, but was again refused.
The union notes that since his employment contract was terminated early at the initiative of the shipowner, in accordance with the terms of the collective agreement, the seafarer was entitled to compensation in the amount of his two-month base rate.
After consultation, the union’s specialists prepared and sent a request for compensation to the company. This week, the seafarer confirmed that he had received compensation in the amount of $2,500 in his account. As previously reported by USM, the Ukrainian and Portuguese seafarers’ unions signed an MOU.
