Ukrzaliznytsia transported almost 80 million tons of cargo in the first half of 2025

In January-June 2025, 79.6 million tons of cargo were transported by rail, which is 11.8% less than the same period last year.

This was reported by the Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” Oleksandr Pertsovsky on Facebook

According to him, with such dynamics during the year, the annual figure will be 50-52% of the volume of cargo in the period before the full-scale invasion.

The largest drop is recorded in the transportation of coal (–27.5%) and grain and milling products (–32.5%).

“At the moment, the lowest load in the history of the railway has fallen: this is extremely painful for the company to be able to function, because it was freight work that has always “fed” the railway,” the Chairman of the Board of JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” noted.

The head of UZ added that farmers point to a late start to the season, so UZ expects some leveling off later in the year (transportation increased in July).

“We are also working with the State Customs Service on enhanced checks of weight standards so that grain is not transported to ports in violation of weight standards, “killing the roads” with trucks,” Pertsovsky emphasized.

By type of transport: exports are falling, respectively, by 38.7 million tons (-13.5%) and domestic transportation by 35.5 million tons (-11.7%). At the same time, it was possible to increase import volumes – 5.3 million tons (+5.4%)

“We managed to convince important players in the fuel market to try railway services and use end-2-end logistics with the UZ subsidiary UZ Cargo Poland,” said Oleksandr Pertsovsky.

“Ukrzaliznytsia” also noted the first steps in building multimodal routes: the first transit container ferries were sent to Georgia, which opens up opportunities for transit to Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and in the future, increasing transit volumes from China via the “Middle Corridor”.
