UZ plans to expand railway corridors to the Baltic ports
“Ukrzaliznytsia” is considering the possibility of expanding the railway to deliver Ukrainian agricultural products and rolled metal to Baltic seaports.
JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” is considering the possibility of expanding railway corridors to Baltic ports. In particular, Lithuanian ports are planned to be involved in the export of Ukrainian agricultural and metallurgical products. This was stated by the chairman of the board of the UZ, Yevhen Lyashchenko, Rail.Insider reports.
At the first stage, it is necessary to obtain a tariff difference subsidy from the EU. Over time, the infrastructure needs to be adapted to increase the capacity of the roads. It is also necessary to transfer the function of control, in particular phytosanitary, to the destination of the cargo. This will facilitate safe and fast transit.
If it is possible to implement the first stage of the project and to interest customers in regular transportation through the port of Klaipeda, the next step may be the development of rail connections between Ukraine and the Baltic ports within the framework of the European initiative “Lanes of Solidarity”.
In this way, Ukraine hopes to implement a “green corridor” to the Baltic ports, as well as to establish an additional strategic route to overcome the food crisis and ensure Europe’s energy security.
