Vodafone to lay submarine cables in the Black Sea bypassing Russia

A modern cable system will be laid across the Black Sea, bypassing Russia.

This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation Mykhailo Fedorov.

According to him, Vodafone will lay a modern cable system across the Black Sea. The new digital route will connect Ukraine, Bulgaria, Georgia and Turkey.

Kardesa is an important project for Ukraine, as it will ensure:

• digital sovereignty and stability of telecommunications infrastructure;

• investments in the telecom sector;

• high-speed and secure Internet for Ukrainians;

• will play the role of a connecting link in Internet traffic between Europe and Asia, bypassing Russia.

Construction will begin in Bulgaria in 2027, the project budget is over 100 million euros.

Thanks to Kardesa, the Black Sea region will receive an additional 500 terabits/s of Internet bandwidth. Submarine cables provide 97-98% of international Internet traffic, so this project is important for the development of the digital ecosystem of the entire region. “One of the key points of our Strategy for the Development of the Electronic Communications Sector until 2030 is to build more international Internet highways to create a sustainable Internet in Ukraine. And soon we will help implement one of the projects of a global scale,” Fedorov wrote.
