What they recommend to the wives of Ukrainian seamen

Many wives of sailors do not have information about the professional activities of their husbands. The MTWTUU talked about the basic recommendations.

“It happens that women do not know the name of the recruitment agency, the ship-owning company, or the name of the vessel on which the sailor works,” the MTWTUU said in a statement.

The trade union emphasized that in modern conditions, wives are recommended to be aware of all aspects of their husband’s contract.

What do you need to know and be able to do?

• Know the name of the company and the vessel;

• use the MarineTraffic resource (allows you to track the movement of the vessel literally in real time);

• have the contacts of the responsible inspector in the crewing company, trade union representatives and know where to find hotlines of diplomatic institutions;

• check whether the seafarer is a member of the MTWTUU;

• connect with trade union organizations and maintain contacts of ITF inspectors around the world (download the ITF Seafarers app);

• keep a copy of the seafarer’s contract at home (in printed or electronic form).

“Furthermore, knowledge of basic maritime terms and procedures can be essential for effective communication with representatives of various organizations when questions arise. Understanding the seafarer’s rights, as well as the company’s rights and obligations to his family, will be a reliable tool for protecting interests in case of ambiguous or emergency situations,” MTWTUU emphasizes.
