Greek shipowners are transporting less and less Russian oil

Shipowners of Greek tankers refuse to trade in Russian crude oil due to increased US sanctions.

As Bloomberg Bloomberg notes, the number of Greek tankers carrying Russian oil dropped to eight in January. This is a strong reduction – there were about 40 such tankers in May, and about 20 each month in the second half of 2023.

Refusal to transport Rosneft is due to the strengthening of US sanctions.

Thus, earlier the US Treasury Department asked the owners of Western tankers to provide evidence of what they did to comply with the Russian oil price limit of $60 per barrel. Officials from the two Athens-based companies said shortly afterward that they were “exerting caution while assessing the situation.”

The publication noted that the loss of the Greek fleet would put even greater pressure on Russian tankers and the “shadow fleet”.

As USM reported, in November 2023, Greek shipping companies Minerva Marine, Thenamaris and TMS Tankers stopped transporting Russian oil, fearing US sanctions.

Previously, these companies were included in the list of sponsors of the war by National Agency on Corruption Prevention.
