The EU may ban the import of fresh fish from the Russian Federation

A ban on the import of fresh fish from the Russian Federation to the countries of the European Union may be added to the new package of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

EU countries are considering a possible ban on the import of fresh fish from Russia as part of a new package of sanctions aimed at Moscow over the war in Ukraine. Die Welt write about it.

Official discussion of this issue will begin closer to the beginning of autumn. The Baltic countries are actively lobbying for this ban. Previously, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Sweden have already accused Russia of illegally fishing cod, herring and haddock in the Baltic Sea during seasonal bans that are enforced by other countries.

We will remind you that in 2022, the EU already banned the import of Russian seafood, caviar and crustaceans, but fresh fish did not fall under this ban. However, the EU imposed a 13.7% duty on imports of Russian white fish (in particular, pollock, cod and haddock products). The European Commission also stopped certification of Russian fish farms and fishing vessels.

Recently, USM wrote that due to sanctions, the Russian “Arctic LNG-2” reduced the processing of natural gas at its plant to a minimum.
