In the Odesa region, kilograms of fuel oil that washed ashore after the accident of Russian tankers in the Kerch Strait were collected.

In the Odesa region, up to four kilograms of fuel oil that washed ashore the other day were collected. The coast is now clean, said Ivan Rusev, head of the scientific research department of the Tuzlivski Lymany National Park.

In three days, a section 200 m long and 30-70 cm wide was cleaned. In total, about 40 km of the coast were examined.

Rusev noted that there are no guarantees that fuel oil will not wash ashore again, because millions of small fractions are still drifting in the waters of the northwestern part of the Black Sea.

“Resources are needed to quickly detect, urgently collect and destroy this threat, and the national park simply does not have them,” he stressed.

According to Rusev, a rare bird from the Red Book of Ukraine, the red-necked loon, contaminated with fuel oil, was also washed ashore.

Also on January 27, the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleh Kiper, reported that the administration held an extraordinary meeting of the commission on environmental safety and emergencies. The main issue was preventing an ecological disaster in the Black Sea.

All authorized bodies, in particular the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, the Institute of Marine Biology, the Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health, heads of local administrations and communities, the Sea Ports Administration, nature reserves, the State Service for Food and Consumer Protection and the State Environmental Inspectorate, were instructed to:

• strengthen control of the Black Sea water area and coast

• ensure systematic sampling and laboratory tests

• in the event of detection of oil products – ensure primary protection measures, their collection and temporary storage with subsequent disposal

• submit data and prepare available oil skimmers, biosorbents, boom barriers

• calculate the necessary resources for the elimination of pollution

• clean up the contaminated areas of the water area in agreement with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

• calculate the damage caused to the environment.

We will remind you that last week, fuel oil spilled in the Kerch Strait as a result of the accident of Russian tankers reached Odesa region.
