EU and UK discuss full trade embargo against Russia

The EU and UK are discussing sweeping sanctions at a summit in Albania over Russia’s stance on the ceasefire in Ukraine.

One option is a full trade embargo against Russia,  Politico reported, citing diplomats from the European Political Community meeting.

After Russian President Vladimir Putin ignored proposals for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, EU and UK leaders are looking for ways to deal a blow to the Russian economy that would dwarf any previous round of sanctions.

The plan currently under discussion is inspired by a proposal by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who proposed imposing 500 percent sanctions on Russian exports if Russia does not stop attacking Ukraine. He has been in contact with European counterparts in recent days, including French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

Potential measures against Moscow could range from tariffs on Russian exports to a full trade embargo, two diplomats said. While some on the continent are skeptical that Graham will be able to win President Trump’s support for sanctions against Russia, diplomats said Ukraine’s supporters could push through their own sanctions package without U.S. involvement.

USM previously reported that the EU would impose sanctions on 189 “shadow fleet” vessels.
