Odesa region resident convicted of illegally discharging waste from ships

A resident of Odesa region was found guilty of land pollution and aiding and abetting abuse of office.

The Izmail City District Court approved a plea agreement between the man and the prosecutor, writes “Intent”.

According to the case materials, the man agreed to participate in the activities of a group that included entrepreneurs. They, using their official powers, illegally collected hazardous liquid waste from vessels and dumped it at a solid waste landfill in the Safyanivka village council of the Izmail district. At the same time, they did not have permits and the appropriate technical base for handling such waste.

The organizer of the scheme concluded an agreement with a licensed company to cover up illegal activities, but the document was not properly drawn up and did not enter into force.

The convict himself was not part of the organized group, but he provided his personal documents (passport and driver’s license) to the director of the agency company. This allowed the issuance of permits for trucks that removed ballast and oily water from port ships and dumped them in landfills.

As a result, more than 4.17 million hryvnias of damage was caused to the environment.

The court sentenced the man to three years in prison with a ban on working in the waste management sector for two years. However, the main sentence was replaced with a year of probation.
