The volume of grain transportation in containers by rail has decreased by 10% over the past six months

In January-June 2025, the total volume of containerized cargo transportation by rail amounted to 114.8 thousand DFE (-18% compared to the same period in 2024).

This was reported by Valery Tkachev, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Technology and Commercial Work of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia, Rail.insider writes.

The largest volume of grain cargo was transported – 32.9 thousand DFE. However, the total share of grain transportation in containers decreased by 10% to 29%.

Tkachev explained the decrease by the fact that farmers are now returning to the use of cheaper specialized grain wagons (100–200 UAH/day). In addition, most exports are now sent through the seaports of Ukraine (86–92%), which also contributes to transportation in grain wagons.

The largest number of DFUs was transported in export traffic – 71.8 thousand (63%), in import traffic – 29.3 thousand DFUs (25%), and in domestic traffic – 13.6 thousand DFUs (12%).

Earlier, USM reported that Ukrzaliznytsia transported almost 80 million tons of cargo in the first half of 2025.
