The USPA commented on the state of the water area after the ship sank off the coast of Odesa

After the sinking of the Golden Leo dry cargo ship, services are checking the Black Sea water area for possible pollution and preparing to eliminate the consequences of the fuel leak.

This was reported by the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Ukrainian  Sea Ports Administration of Ukraine and the State Emergency Service in a joint statement.

An extraordinary meeting of the commission on technogenic and environmental safety and emergencies was held in the Odesa Regional Military Administration. The statement revealed that the services are currently constantly monitoring the state of the sea, assessing the impact of the incident on the environment and shipping safety, and also monitoring a possible leak of fuel and lubricants.

The State Emergency Service, the State Environmental Inspectorate, the Ukrainian Maritime Administration, the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, the Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the State Service for Food and Consumer Protection and other specialized institutions were involved in the monitoring.

Coastal communities were instructed to constantly check the state of the water area. The responsible services also specified the available forces and equipment that can be quickly involved to localize and eliminate possible pollution.

The Golden Leo, a corn-laden vessel, was hit by a Russian attack on July 19 as it left the port of Odesa. The dry cargo ship became unseaworthy and sank on July 26 about five nautical miles off the coast of Odesa. Ten people died in the attack.
