Romania and Ukraine will develop fuel supply infrastructure via river routes

The government has reached agreements on expanding the logistical capacity of railways and rivers through Romania for fuel supplies.

This was announced by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

The situation on the fuel market and readiness to operate in conditions of military risks were discussed jointly by the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Tax and Customs Services, the Antimonopoly Committee and business representatives.

According to the Minister of Energy, as of September 3, 2026, the market remains controlled and balanced, the available resources allow covering the current needs of consumers.

To ensure that the situation remains manageable, a number of measures are being taken. In particular, discussions continue on the diversification of supply routes. Particular attention is paid to the Romanian direction.

“We have reached specific agreements on expanding the logistical capacity of railways and rivers through Romania following the recent meeting of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy with President of Romania Nicusor Dan. We are working at the government level to implement them,” said Denys Shmyhal. In particular, the government has launched a pilot project on underground fuel storage. An extensive system of underground storage facilities will be created in Ukraine and proper conditions will be provided for the safe storage of petroleum products. Fuel reserves are also being increased.
