The SBU exposed the head of the Odesa Customs Laboratory for bribery

The Security Service of Ukraine exposed the head of the Odesa department of expertise and research of the specialized laboratory of the State Customs Service for corruption.

“The official established a mechanism for systematically extorting money from businessmen. For bribes, the official promised importers of food products not to create artificial obstacles during quality studies of foreign goods imported into Ukraine,” the SBU press service reports.

The official also guaranteed entrepreneurs an “accelerated” process of issuing relevant documentation with positive conclusions of the examination.

It is noted that the official demanded $300 for each “extraordinary” study. Dozens of representatives of commercial structures that shipped foreign products to Ukraine passed through the customs laboratory in Odesa every day, according to the SBU.

“Law enforcement officers detained the suspect at the workplace while receiving another bribe. Currently, he has been notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an illegal benefit by an official). The perpetrator faces up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property,” the SBU reports.
