A methane leak occurred on a russian ship
Due to a methane leak on a russian ship, the crew had to be evacuated and a security perimeter created around the port.
A dangerous methane leak occurred on the russian container ship Fesco Tatarstan. The incident took place in the port of Korsakov on Sakhalriin. The methane leak was reported on February 24, when the Fesco Tatarstan vessel was waiting at the port to unload.
Emergency personnel ordered the evacuation of the 17 crew members on board the vessel and established a safety perimeter in the port.
The leak occurred from the blow-off valve of a container loaded with 20 tons of methane. It was possible to stop the leak only the next day – February 25. The difficulty was that the containers prevented access to the gas container. On the same day, the crew was ordered to board the ship and sent to Vladivostok.
The distance to the nearest residential buildings is 1 km, but local officials reported that “the wind carried away all the gas in Aniva’s halls.”
Fesco Tatarstan is a container ship with a capacity of 698 TEU and a deadweight of 8.2 thousand tons. The vessel, built in 2008 in China and formerly known as JRS Corvus, was purchased by the russian company Fesco only at the end of 2022. Fesco Tatarstan operates between the ports of Vladivostok and Korsakov.
