Cargo ship with Ukrainian crew sinks in the Black Sea

All ten crew members are Ukrainian citizens. They were rescued by a Turkish ship passing nearby.

The Cameroon-flagged cargo ship Eileen sank in the Black Sea 140 nautical miles from Varna, Bulgaria. Maritime.bg reports.

The ship sent a distress signal after 13:00 on October 12 – water began to enter the ship. The crew tried to stabilize the situation on their own, but due to a strong list, the ship began to sink.

Bulgarian coast guard units, as well as ships from Romania and Turkey, including a Bulgarian Navy helicopter and the Bodri corvette, went to help.

The closest to the scene of the accident was the Turkish auxiliary ship Murat Ilhan, which quickly picked up the sailors on board. According to authorities, all of them are alive and uninjured.

The cargo ship EILEEN, built in 1993, belonged to a company from Odessa and was heading from Turkey to Ukraine. According to international maritime registers, during recent inspections the ship was repeatedly detained in the ports of Georgia, Greece and Turkey due to violations of safety requirements.
