EU launches security strategy for the Black Sea: Ukraine among priorities

The EU has presented a strategic plan for the protection of the Black Sea, which includes monitoring infrastructure and combating the shadow fleet of the Russian Federation.

In response to the growing threats from Russia, the EU has announced a new Black Sea Security Strategy. This is reported by “Militarnyi”.

A key element of the document will be the creation of the “Black Sea Maritime Security Center” – a specialized hub for monitoring, early warning and analysis of risks in the region.

The center will collect data from satellites and sonar systems for maritime patrols, and will also monitor potentially dangerous activities in the Black Sea. Special attention will be paid to the EU’s underwater and coastal infrastructure: communication cables, gas and wind power plants, offshore platforms.

The document provides for a number of other important measures: from demining the water area to countering the “shadow fleet” – Russian tankers that circumvent sanctions. It is also planned to protect trade routes and modernize infrastructure – ports, roads, railways and airports.

Despite its scale, the strategy does not yet have separate funding – the project will be integrated into existing EU programs, in particular the SAFE defense initiative, the budget of which reaches 150 billion euros.

The issue of the location of the Black Sea Center itself is still open. According to the plan, the specific parameters of its work should be determined by the end of the summer.

A separate emphasis is placed on cooperation with EU partner countries that are not members of the bloc. Among them are Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

USM also recently wrote that Ukraine destroyed 40% of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea.
