EU not doing enough to stop Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’, says European Parliament President

The bloc needs to do more to ensure that the “shadow fleet” ships do not continue to sail in European waters.

European Parliament President Roberta Metzola said, Sky News reports.

The European Parliament President acknowledged that European countries continue to finance Russia’s war in Ukraine by buying oil and gas.

In an interview with Sky News’ The World With Yalda Hakim, Roberta Metzola called the situation “unacceptable.” She also admitted that the EU is not doing enough to stop the Russian “shadow fleet” from transporting sanctioned oil through European waters.

“We still need to do more on the “shadow fleet” because more ships need to be arrested,” she said.

Metzola noted that while the EU has imposed 19 packages of sanctions against Russia, more is needed.

“For us, any possibility that Russia will continue to wage war against Ukraine and against Europe as a whole, using funds that could inadvertently or explicitly come from the European Union, is unacceptable,” she added.

USM previously reported that Britain is preparing new sanctions against the Russian “shadow fleet” over schemes to circumvent restrictions.
