EU plans to ban Russian tankers from sailing in the Baltic and North Seas, — media

The European Union is preparing new sanctions against the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation, in particular – against 25 tankers in the Baltic and North Seas.

This is stated in the proposal of the European Commission, which was obtained by the EUobserver.

25 vessels operating in the Baltic and North Seas are included in the list of 149 tankers that may fall under new restrictions for participating in circumventing the oil embargo.

If included in the sanctions list, the tankers will be prohibited from entering EU ports, using the services of European shipping companies, including insurance, repairs and refueling.

As EUobserver notes, these tankers pose a threat to the environment – in particular, they increase the risks of oil spills and damage to underwater cables. According to maritime trackers, as of May 12, 11 Russian tankers were in the Gulf of Finland, two more in the western Baltic, and 12 near the British Isles.

Earlier, USM reported that the EU was adding almost 200 tankers from Russia’s “shadow fleet” to the sanctions list.
