EU summit to discuss escalation of attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea

According to European officials, the increase in Russian attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea is unacceptable.

The European Council will consider the increase in attacks on civilian and commercial vessels in the Black Sea, as well as Russia’s hybrid campaigns, at a meeting later this week. This was stated by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa.

Costa expressed full solidarity with Bulgaria after the attacks on cargo ships off its coast. According to him, attacks on civilian shipping and commercial vessels in the Black Sea are increasing, and such actions are completely unacceptable.

Recall that on the night of October 13, drones attacked two vessels near the coast of Bulgaria. One of the vessels sank. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha reported that citizens of Ukraine and Azerbaijan were injured as a result of the attacks.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that the Russian ambassador would be summoned over the attacks. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also discussed the incidents with Radev and stated his readiness to adjust the Alliance’s defense measures as needed.

As USM reported, the day before, the Pope called for ensuring the safe transportation of grain through the Black Sea.
