Finnish authorities have accused senior officers aboard the oil tanker Eagle S, linked to the Russian “shadow fleet”, of criminal acts.

According to the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, the “Eagle S” dragged its anchor almost 100 km along the seabed, damaging the Estlink-2 cable at a depth of up to 90 m. At the time of the incident, the Cook Islands-flagged vessel was carrying 35,000 tons of oil. Finnish investigators later escorted the vessel to a Finnish port after determining that it was the likely cause of the accident.

The ship’s three senior officers — the captain, chief mate and second mate — are suspected of aggravated criminal mischief and aggravated interference with telecommunications.

Finnish police have forwarded the results of the investigation to the prosecutor’s office for a decision on whether to bring formal charges.

USM previously reported that Finland has released the tanker “Eagle S” from arrest.
