Flood on the Danube: there are fatalities, shipping has been suspended
Flooding in parts of southern Germany has killed five people. The danger also spreads across the Danube to Austria and Hungary.
Five people died after heavy rain caused rivers to burst their banks in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, writes the BBC.
For example, the water level in the city of Passau, where three rivers meet, has now risen by almost 10 meters (32 feet), the highest level in a decade.
Freight transport on the Rhine in some areas of southern Germany remains suspended. At the same time, the authorities of Baden-Württemberg in the southwest said that the water level will drop in the coming days.
In Austria, the water level in the river rose more than predicted. The Danube overflowed its banks in Linz, leaving areas near the shores under water. A temporary suspension of shipping in the area of Lower Austria is reported. Tourists are also removed from cruise ships.
