Free trade between Ukraine and the EU is under threat
The representatives of the European Union could not make a decision on the continuation of measures to liberalize trade with Ukraine.
On March 20, EU ambassadors had to approve a temporary agreement on the extension of free trade with Ukraine for another year. However, several countries refused, demanding more time to “assess the impact of the agreement,” Politico writes.
Officials will discuss the matter further at a meeting next week.
The compromise reached between negotiators from the European Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission will expand the restrictions on imports. In particular, they will cover four additional import positions.
Also, the negotiators decided not to extend the base period of 2022-2023 for the calculation of limits to include 2021, when imports from Ukraine to the EU were much smaller.
Although the decision complicates the process, negotiators hope to be able to agree on the measures before they expire in early June.
USM recently wrote that France plans to limit Ukrainian imports.
