Greenpeace protests against a vessel that refuels Russian tankers
On Friday, April 12, Greenpeace activists started a protest against a bunkering vessel that was spotted in the gas station of the so-called Russian “shadow fleet”.
Activists say the “Zircone”, which is in international waters off the Swedish island of Gotland, has fueled more than 50 oil tankers heading to or from Russian ports in the past two months.
On April 12, Greenpeace approached the vessel in boats and wrote on the tanker “oil fuels war – people want peace.”
“The Russian fleet is a serious threat to our precious seas and coasts. We call on the Swedish government to block the operation of “Zircone” in the Swedish economic zone and thus eliminate the critical infrastructure of the Russian fleet, which is financing the war in Ukraine,” said Rolf Lindahl, one of the leaders of Greenpeace Nordic.
Lindahl added that the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation poses not only an ecological threat, but also incites Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“Sanctions are vague because they allow this shadow fleet because of global society’s dependence on oil. There is an urgent need to transition to safe, green energy,” Lindahl added.
