In September, an anchorage for Ukrainian grain will be opened in Constanta

An additional anchorage in Constanta will strengthen the competitive advantages of the Danube direction of agricultural exports.

The colleagues from Romania announced the opening of an additional anchorage during an online meeting in the Quint format with the participation of representatives of the European Commission, the US government, the governments of the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine, UDS writes.

“Last year, the UDS was one of the initiators of the creation of an anchorage in Constanta. The capacity of the port’s terminals was not enough for transshipment of Ukrainian grain. At that time, up to 600 barges with grain were in the port, and the wait for unloading could last 30-40 days,” the report says.

Currently, the UDS fleet is once again returning to transporting grain from Ukrainian ports to Constanta. It is expected that the anchorage will strengthen the competitive advantages of the Danube export route.

“Now we are waiting for the conditions. The export of Ukrainian grain through the Danube will be preserved only if all components of the logistics chain become cheaper. If compared with last year, freight rates for river transportation from Ukraine to Romania have decreased by three times. We are working on reducing the tariff for railway transportation to Izmail,” the UDS stressed.

As previously reported by USM, in 2023 the cargo turnover of the port of Constanta was a record 92.5 million tons. Significant growth was ensured due to Ukrainian cargo flows.
