India condemns Russian attack on bulk carrier “Golden Leo” leaving Odesa

New Delhi stressed that Russian attacks on commercial shipping undermine the security of international maritime trade.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India summoned the Russian Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi, Vladimir Ladanov, after the death of four Indian sailors as a result of a Russian missile strike on the bulk carrier Golden Leo.
The Russian diplomat was officially protested and New Delhi’s position on the inadmissibility of attacks on civilian merchant ships was conveyed to him.
“The Ministry expressed to him India’s serious concern and unequivocal condemnation of the attack on the commercial vessel MV Golden Leo on July 19, 2026, which resulted in the death of four Indians,” the statement said.
“Such attacks undermine the security and stability of international maritime trade,” the department stressed.
The Russian diplomat was also asked to convey to the Russian leadership India’s position that attacks on commercial vessels and the deaths of civilian seafarers are unacceptable.
Recall that on July 19, Russian forces launched three cruise missiles at the “Golden Leo” bulk carrier under the Guinea-Bissau flag, which belongs to a Turkish shipowner and was leaving the port of Odesa after loading corn. The ship was heading for the Bosphorus when it was attacked.
Initially, the Ukrainian side reported five dead, eight rescued and several missing. Subsequently, the Indian Foreign Ministry confirmed the death of four of its citizens, another Indian sailor is in critical condition.
