Last year, the railway transported almost 29 million tons of grain

For 12 months of 2025, the volume of grain cargo transportation by rail amounted to 28.856 million tons, of which more than 24 million tons were sent for export.

This was reported by Valeriy Tkachev, Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation Technology and Commercial Work of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia.

In general, the total number of transported cargoes is 27.3% less compared to 2024. According to Valeriy Tkachev, the main reasons for the decrease in grain transportation by rail are:

• an overestimated comparative base (a record volume of grain cargo transportation was recorded in 2024 due to the displacement of grain exports of the 2023 harvest due to the opening of the maritime corridor);

• negative price dynamics for Ukrainian grain at the end of 2025 (competition in sales markets has intensified; competitors from South America and the Russian Federation are displacing Ukrainian grain; prices for major grain crops have fallen, so Ukrainian farmers have suspended grain sales in anticipation of price increases);

• postponement of the 2025 corn harvest by almost a month (farmers did not physically have time to export the corn for export in the fall of 2025);

• logistical complications in November–December 2025 due to strikes on railway and port infrastructure.

The lion’s share of grain was transported to seaports – 92%, or 23.454 million tons. Compared to the previous year, there is a decrease of 19.7%.

At the same time, the decrease in grain exports through western border crossings is 58.7%. Last year, 2.27 million tons, or 8%, were transported through them.

Earlier it became known that Ukrzaliznytsia suffered more than $5.8 billion in losses from Russian attacks.
