The Romanian company Liberty Galati is modernizing the port of Romportmet on the Danube.

Steel producer Liberty Galati, a subsidiary of the British Liberty Steel, is modernizing the Romportmet port, Rail.insider reports.

The port is being modernized to increase its throughput and reduce the impact of Russia’s blockade of the Black Sea.

The total cost of the project is 10.1 million lei ($2.22 million). The Transport Program of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania for 2021-2027 is also involved in the financing, with a contribution of 8.49 million lei ($1.86 million).

The port will be modernized by the end of 2024. Within its limits, they plan to purchase new equipment for loading and unloading raw materials, developed taking into account the highest environmental standards.

The private port of Romportmet is located on the 157th  km on the left bank of the Danube, and is one of the most modern sea ports. With approximately 2.5 km of quays and numerous cranes, the port can handle a wide range of cargoes, including dry cargo as well as finished steel products.

Romportmet port berths can load and unload ocean-going vessels of up to 7,000 dwt, as well as river barges.
