Moldovan farmers demand extension of restrictions on Ukrainian grain

Moldovan farmers demand extension of restrictions on grain and sunflower imports from Ukraine to 2025.

Moldovan agricultural associations have called on the government to extend restrictions on grain and sunflower imports from Ukraine to 2025. The current restrictions expire on December 31, 2024, writes APK-Inform.

“Maintaining the import licensing regime is critically important for protecting the local agricultural sector. Last year’s import liberalization had catastrophic consequences for Moldovan farmers, who are now struggling to survive,” wrote the Moldovan trade union “Farmer’s Power.”

Recall that in July 2024, the Moldovan parliament introduced a special regime for the import of wheat, corn and sunflower. Since then, these crops can only be imported into the country with an appropriate license. This decision was made under pressure from farmers’ associations, which had previously threatened to resume protests if the government did not protect domestic producers, following the example of other Eastern European countries. USM recently wrote that demand for Ukrainian sunflower is growing due to changes in export conditions.
