Moldovan farmers protest again because of Ukrainian grain

Another strike against the import of Ukrainian agricultural products is starting in Moldova.

The Moldovan trade union “Farmers’ Power” insists on temporarily restricting the import of wheat, corn, rape and sunflower from Ukraine, local media reports.

At the request of farmers, the government should oblige the port of Giurgiulesti to export only agricultural products of Moldovan origin from July 1 to December 31, 2023. Otherwise, farmers must be paid all subsidy debts for 2022 by July 1.

The protesters also ask the government to allocate compensation to small and medium-sized farmers in the amount of at least 3,000 lei per hectare for agricultural crops of the first group no later than August 1, 2023.
