NATO will increase deterrence of Russia in the Black Sea

The North Atlantic Alliance will strengthen Russia’s deterrence in the Black and Baltic Seas.

NATO is working on strengthening defense capabilities in the Black and Baltic Seas. Vice-Admiral Jeffrey Hughes, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Supreme Command of the NATO Armed Forces for Transformation, said this, Ukrinform reports.

“It is clear that the Black Sea is a very meaningful set of problems that we are currently dealing with,” the admiral emphasized.

He noted that he cannot go into the details of the strategy at the moment for obvious reasons. However, the general concept boils down to how best to ensure compliance with the international order, guarantee the free and open flow of trade in the Black Sea, and the implementation of international conventions.

Hughes also confirmed that NATO has gained more opportunities to deter potential Russian aggression in the Baltic Sea region after Sweden and Norway joined the Alliance.

Earlier, the USM reported that more than 30 NATO ships had arrived in Klaipeda for training.
