“Noosfera” celebrates five years under its Ukrainian name

The Ukrainian research vessel Noosphere received its current name five years ago, replacing the British James Clark Ross.
The icebreaker is currently in its sixth Antarctic season, the National Antarctic Research Center reported.
Currently, “Noosfera” has made its first stop near Antarctica within the current season. The vessel provides logistics for the Polish Antarctic Station Artstowski.
During the season, the icebreaker is also to support a large-scale Ukrainian-Swedish expedition to the Weddell Sea.
In addition, “Noosfera” will traditionally take part in the changeover of Ukrainian polar explorers at the Akademik Vernadskyi station.
It will be recalled that Ukraine acquired the former British icebreaker James Clark Ross in 2021. After transferring to the Ukrainian flag, the vessel was named “Noosfera” and has since been used to support Ukrainian Antarctic expeditions and international scientific programs.
Earlier, the “Noosfera” icebreaker began a new Antarctic season.
