Number of abandoned seafarers doubled in 2024

Last year, the number of cases of crew abandonment more than doubled compared to the record level of 2023.

Experts attribute this to the constant growth of ships carrying sanctioned oil, writes Splash 24/7.

According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), 310 cases of crew abandonment were registered in 2024, which is 118% more than in the record year of 2023 – 142.

“Cases of seafarers being left on abandoned ships have increased sharply in the 2020s, first due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and then due to the increase in the so-called “shadow fleet”. For comparison, the 2024 figure is almost 2,000% higher than the annual figure registered a decade ago,” the material says.

Recall, back in May last year, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) reported that the number of such cases had equaled the figures for 2023.
