One of Kernel’s plants has stopped operations due to a shortage of raw materials
Kernel, Ukraine’s largest sunflower oil producer, has shut down its operations due to a shortage of raw materials.
In January 2025, one of Kernel’s plants shut down due to a shortage of sunflower seeds on the market, the company said in its second-quarter financial report.
During this period, Kernel processed 973,000 tons of oilseeds, up 20% year-on-year. Processing volumes in October-December 2024 increased by 42%.
Due to limited availability of sunflower seeds on the market, three Kernel plants were processing other oilseeds — soybeans (93,000 tons) and rapeseed (14,000 tons). One of the plants shut down in January.
Kernel’s grain exports in the second quarter of fiscal 2025 reached 1.37 million tonnes, reflecting a 7% decrease compared to the previous quarter and a 22% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Despite the slowdown in grain exports, export terminal throughput reached 2.6 million tonnes in the second quarter of fiscal 2025, a 19% increase compared to the previous quarter.
USM previously reported that a sunflower shortage forced Kernel to switch to soybean processing.
