Over 100 Russian tankers will lose their Panamanian and Barbados flags
Panama and Barbados will strip more than a hundred tankers of Russia’s shadow fleet of their flags.
114 tankers of Russia’s “shadow fleet” will be forced to find a new flag, Bloomberg reports.
The vessels will have to re-register in countries such as Tanzania or Sao Tome and Principe. Some tankers removed from the Barbados ship register have already been registered in these countries.
Thus, the Barbados ship register will require 46 tankers to remove their flags by the end of January due to being on the UK’s sanctions list. Of these, 14 are also under US sanctions. Barbados does not have sanctions against Russia, but the country’s ship register is maintained in London.
Panama recently began deregistering 68 tankers that were subject to US sanctions.
USM previously reported that Panama will cancel the registration of four gas tankers due to US sanctions. Recall that US President Donald Trump stated during his inaugural speech that the US would regain the Panama Canal.
