Poland promises tough measures against Russia’s “shadow fleet” during its presidency of the Council of the EU

Warsaw said that countering Russian vessels that help circumvent sanctions is one of the key priorities of the Polish presidency of the EU.
The fight against the “shadow fleet” has been named one of the main tasks of the Polish presidency of the EU Council. This was stated by the Polish Foreign Ministry after an expert meeting of representatives of the EU countries and the Scandinavian group NB8++, writes Gospodarka Morska.
During the event, ways to counter Russia’s schemes were discussed: falsification of ship flags, jamming of navigation signals and concealment of real owners. Poland promised to more actively promote initiatives to strengthen sanctions and expand the lists of restricted vessels. Currently, about 350 vessels are under EU restrictions.
“We must take all possible measures not only to effectively counter the illegal practices of the shadow fleet, but also to consistently focus on our main goal: supporting Ukraine and limiting Russia’s ability to finance further aggression,” said Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Anna Radwan-Renshef.
Also, the day before, USM wrote that Australia had for the first time banned “shadow fleet” vessels from entering its ports.
