Poland to send previously detained Russian tanker for scrapping

The Polish Ministry of Infrastructure has decided to scrap the Russian tanker Khatanga, which has been in the port of Gdynia for seven years.

It should be noted that the 1987-built vessel with a deadweight of 23,000 tons was detained in October 2017 after failing an inspection by the port administration due to its dilapidated condition.

The owner of the vessel, Murmansk Maritime Shipping Company, promised repairs, which were never carried out – the Russian company went bankrupt in 2020. Since then, the vessel’s condition has deteriorated even further.

Now, Poland’s State Secretary for Infrastructure, Arkadiusz Marchewka, wrote on social media that it was time to “take Russian scrap out of our port.”

The Polish port is expected to sell the vessel for scrap, and the proceeds from the sale will cover unpaid dock dues.
