Romanian ports will expand opportunities for transshipment of Ukrainian cargo

Ukraine and Romania strengthen transport links: the parties signed a Memorandum on the development of border infrastructure.

Within the framework of the Carpathian Economic Forum, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Mykola Kalashnyk and the State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Romania Ionel Scriosteanu signed a Memorandum of Understanding on strengthening cooperation to ensure reliable transit of Ukrainian goods.

The memorandum is based on the updated Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure between the countries, which takes into account new needs and challenges in the context of ensuring the transportation of goods and passengers.

The memorandum defines further joint steps of Ukraine and Romania to develop transport routes between the countries. This concerns the modernization and development of road checkpoints and access roads, strengthening railway connections, simplifying border control procedures, as well as expanding opportunities for the transshipment of Ukrainian goods in Romanian ports.

A separate area of ​​cooperation is the development of joint border infrastructure. Ukraine and Romania plan to increase the throughput capacity of existing border crossings and develop new connections. The updated joint strategy covers 17 border crossings, 10 of which are new proposals.

“The Romanian direction is extremely important for Ukrainian logistics in the conditions of a full-scale war. Our task now is to support the systematic development of the entire transport corridor: border crossings, access roads, railways and port infrastructure. The signed Memorandum defines specific areas of this work. It is important for us to increase the throughput capacity of the border and create stable and predictable routes for Ukrainian business to the European Union and Romanian ports,” commented Mykola Kalashnyk.

The next stage will be the transition to the implementation of the infrastructure projects identified in the Memorandum and attracting financing for their implementation. Ukraine and Romania will continue coordination for the synchronous development of infrastructure on both sides of the border, increasing its capacity and strengthening transport connections between Ukraine and the European Union.
