Russia was excluded from the international Danube Commission

The Danube Commission decided to exclude the Russian Federation because of its missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube.

“Russia has suffered another diplomatic defeat in the Danube Commission, one of the oldest international organizations in the world,” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.

Thus, yesterday, December 14, at its 100th anniversary session under the chairmanship of Ukraine, the Danube Commission decided that Russia’s membership is incompatible in view of its missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube, Business-Censor writes.

Kuleba said that the Russian Federation must leave the Commission by February 29, 2024, otherwise the members of the Commission will no longer recognize their obligations to the country under the founding Belgrade Convention on the Danube Navigation Regime.

“This decision is an appropriate response to the violation of the principles of free and safe navigation on the Danube. It is also based on the previous decision of the Commission, adopted on March 17, 2022, to reject the powers of the Russians, ban the Russians from participating in all meetings and dismiss the Russians from the Secretariat,” said Kuleba.
