Russia was officially expelled from the Danube Commission
In addition, for the first time in history, the Commission imposed a fine on Russia for non-payment of contributions after it was stripped of its powers in March 2022.
As of March 1, Russia is no longer a member of the Danube Commission. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba.
Also, for the first time in history, the Commission imposed a fine on Russia for non-payment of contributions after its removal from the organization in March 2022.
“Russia had until February 29 to independently withdraw from the organization. However, the aggressor did not have enough courage for this. As a result, as of today, the member states of the Commission will no longer officially recognize their obligations to Russia under the founding Belgrade Convention,” Kuleba commented.
It will be recalled that on December 14, 2023, the Commission decided at its 100th anniversary session that the terrorist actions of the Russian Federation are incompatible with the Belgrade Convention. Earlier, on March 17, 2022, Russians were banned from participating in all meetings of the Commission.
“I thank the Danube Commission, our Danube partners and everyone who helped make this historic decision. I call on all international organizations to follow this example, isolate Russian diplomats and expel Russia. Aggressors and terrorists have no place in any authoritative international forums,” the minister emphasized.
