Russian attacks and blockade of Black Sea ports affected Zaporizhstal’s losses

For 9 months of 2026, Zaporizhstal received 2.3 billion UAH of net loss, while last year for the same period the company received 1.89 billion UAH of profit.
The financial results were affected by the shelling of the Russian Federation, problems with logistics, energy risks and EU trade restrictions, Interfax-Ukraine writes.
In the third quarter alone, the company’s loss amounted to 1.25 billion UAH. Income from ordinary activities for nine months decreased by 8.3%, to 49.16 billion UAH. One of the key factors for the company was the sharp escalation of Russian attacks.
In particular, in the interim report of Zaporizhstal, restrictions on shipping in the Black Sea were also named among the key risks. Due to problems with ports, the company is forced to use multimodal routes, which are carried out both through the ports of the Danube River, and by rail and road transport. In turn, this increases logistics costs and extends contract execution times.
An additional risk remains the overload of western border crossings. This can complicate both the import of raw materials and the export of finished products.
Another critical factor is energy supply. The plant’s production process directly depends on stable electricity, so significant disruptions can force the company to operate only at reduced volumes.
New EU rules are also putting pressure on the financial prospects. Stricter restrictions on the import of certain types of steel products into the European Union came into effect on July 1, 2026. The company calls CBAM, which gradually increases financial and administrative costs for steel suppliers to the European market, a separate risk.
