The long-suffering ship of the Russian Federation had an engine failure on the approach to Novorossiysk.
The Russian container ship “Ascalon” broke down on the approach to Novorossiysk. On January 15, the ship, which was traveling in ballast from Alexandria, Turkey, went off course 6.5 miles from the coast, rosZMI reports.
It is noted that the ship’s main engine failed. “Ascalon” drifted uncontrollably to the shore and posed a threat to Russian shipping.
The tug “Mercury” was sent to the ill-fated container ship. However, due to bad weather and the impossibility of installing a towing line, the “Mercury” crew all these days rescuers “ensure safe parking” of the malfunctioning vessel.
Earlier, the container ship needed help more than once. In September 2023, the crew turned to the Turkish Coast Guard,d, and in December to Russian rescuers.
Information: “Ascalon” (home port St. Petersburg) is a roller container ship built in 1999. Its carrying capacity is 8821 gross tonnage. The current draft is 5 meters. The total length of the ship reaches 126.85 meters, width – 20.3 meters.
