Russian oil tanker collides with cargo ship near Greece

The collision occurred south of the city of Karyst. Both ships suffered minor damage, and Greek authorities are still investigating.

The incident, the circumstances of which have not been clarified, took place on December 24, writes Maritime-Executive.  So far, Greece has not announced either the names of the ships or the ownership of the tanker with Russian oil.

It is only known that it is loaded with more than 131 thousand tons of oil and arrived from Novorossiysk. There were 26 crew members on board. The media suggest that the tanker is a carrier of sanctioned Russian oil and a member of the so-called “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation.

The cargo ship that collided with the tanker was heading empty from Italy to Constanta, Romania. There was a crew of 22 people on board.

According to the Greek media, the accident occurred due to “adverse weather conditions.” Currently, local authorities have detained the vessels for inspection and investigation of the circumstances of the collision.

Earlier, we reported that the Russian Federation has organized new hubs for the transshipment of sanctioned oil near Greece.
