Sanctions are not enough: five countries call for a ban on the import of Russian grain to the EU
Five EU countries have already appealed to the European Commission to ban the import of grain from Russia and Belarus to the EU.
The joint statement was published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania.
The Ministers of Agriculture of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic emphasized that it is important to implement measures aimed at preventing stolen grain from Ukraine from entering the EU market.
The Minister of Agriculture of Lithuania Kyastutis Navickas noted that the EU sanctions against Russia are not enough, therefore additional measures are needed to limit the access of Russian goods to the EU market.
“We ask the European Commission to analyze the possibility of limiting the import of food products from Russia and Belarus into the EU,” the official said.
According to him, while Russia is waging war against Ukraine, its grain continues to enter the EU market. Thus, in 2023, the EU imported 1.53 million tons of Russian grain worth €437.5 million.
USM previously reported that Poland will ask the European Commission to block grain imports from Russia and Belarus.
We will remind, despite the embargo on some types of agricultural products from Ukraine, Poland continues to import the same items from Russia and Belarus. Ukrainian journalists learned about it.
