Sweden releases tanker suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet”

The Swedish authorities have granted permission for the tanker Sea Owl 1, which was detained in March 2026, to leave the port of Trelleborg.

The decision was announced on Monday, October 12, writes Gospodarka Morska.

As reported by the Swedish Transport Administration, it was confirmed that the Sea Owl 1 vessel is registered in Equatorial Guinea, which means that it can no longer be considered to be sailing under a false flag.

Recall that the tanker was detained on March 12 off the coast of Trelleborg. The vessel was suspected of using a false flag (it was sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands) and belonging to the Russian shadow fleet.

The vessel is also on the sanctions list of several states, including the EU countries, in connection with the transportation of fuel products between Russia and Brazil.

The tanker’s crew consisted of 10 Russians and 14 Indonesians.
