The EU countries once again appealed to the European Commission regarding the import of Ukrainian agricultural products

Five EU countries appealed to the European Commission to introduce protection mechanisms for the farmers of these countries against the increased influx of Ukrainian agricultural products.

On Thursday, at the initiative of Poland, a corresponding joint letter of the ministers of agriculture of five EU countries was sent to the Vice President of the European Commission, European Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis and European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski.

The letter concerns exceptional and temporary preventive measures regarding the import of a limited number of goods from Ukraine, writes Ukinform.

It emphasizes that the decision of the European Commission from May 2 to ban the import of Ukrainian agricultural products may become “ineffective and insufficient.” The ministers drew attention to the fact that the introduced import ban does not apply to products from Ukraine, which were subject to national bans of these EU countries until May 2.

Therefore, these countries offer mechanisms to resolve the situation. In particular, they offered to confirm the extension until the end of the year of the decision of the European Commission from May 2 regarding the ban on the import of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower from Ukraine to five EU countries. They also propose to introduce permanent monitoring of the import of other sensitive agro-food products from Ukraine and, if necessary, to provide for the prompt introduction of preventive measures.

In addition, they propose to adapt the level of support to farmers to the actual losses, as well as to allocate additional funds to help farmers, since the budget of the common agrarian policy and national budgets are insufficient.
